New covered carriages are set to grace the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.

As part of a major rolling stock replacement programme, the La’al Ratty has commissioned the new carriages.

The first carriage, built at the Boston Lodge engineering works of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, arrived this month.

Resplendent in a livery of red with padded bench seating and more head room, the carriage offers increased comfort for passengers.

It will undergo testing before going into general service.

Stuart Ross, general manager of the visitor experience at Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, said: "We’re delighted to welcome the first of the new standard class closed carriages to the railway.

"We will be gradually replacing stock at a rate of one or two carriages per year as part of the long term investment in the customer experience."
