Two Whitehaven landmarks will turn purple tonight to mark Rotary's World Polio Day.

The Beacon and the Candlestick will stand with other buildings across the world as they are bathed in purple light to highlight the global fight against the disease.

It has been organised by the Rotary Club of Whitehaven Castle and Copeland Council to raise awareness and donations for the Rotary's campaign to end polio.

Purple represents the colour of the dye placed on a child's finger to show they have been immunised against the disease.

Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative over 30 years ago, rates of the disease have plummeted and it is now endemic in only two countries - Pakistan and Afghanistan.

To raise awareness of the campaign, Rotarians in Whitehaven have also planted purple crocuses around the town, which will bloom into a carpet of purple in the spring.

Elly Day, of Whitehaven Castle Rotary, said: "We are delighted that Mike Starkie and his team at Copeland Council have agreed to showcase Whitehaven in this way. Next year the Harbour Commissioners hope to join in by illuminating the harbour as well. Please support us by visiting the harbour on Thursday evening."

The Rotary Club will also be fundraising in Morrisons, Whitehaven on Friday, and are asking the public to give generously to help end polio.
