Whitehaven Coastguard were called out to rescue a casualty stuck in a 4x4 vehicle on the Ravenglass Estuary.

With the tide coming in, the coastguard was called out yesterday afternoon, along with the team from Millom.

The Whitehaven team were directed by their counterparts to the vehicle on the western shores of the estuary, where it had been attempting to cross the river at the ford when it got into difficulty.

A spokesman for Whitehaven Coastguard said: "With our 4x4 capability, we were able to quickly arrive with the casualty, who was thankfully safe and well and who’s vehicle had been recovered by his friend.

"With the tide still rising, the team and casualty quickly exited the beach and this allowed St Bees RNLI to be stood down."

St Bees RNLI had been called out at 4pm but were stood down as they arrived at Ravenglass, with the news that the rescue was completed.

Cumbria Police and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service also in attendance.
