The A66 has been closed in both directions after a suspected gas leak.

Residents who live in the area are being warned to keep doors and windows closed.

The road is closed at the Fitz and Oakhurst roundabouts and at Brigham.

It was reported just after 11.am.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "Motorists are asked to avoid the area, with closures in place at the Fitz and Oakhurst roundabouts and at Brigham.

"Those living nearby are being advised to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution – although the suspected leak is some way away from any homes.

"Engineers have been called out. The suspected leak is between the Fitz and Oakhurst roundabouts."

Highways England have put diversions in place.

The A66 is closed in both directions between the A595 Junctions Cockermouth and Bridgefoot due to a gas leak

Eastbound - Follow the solid diamond symbol from Workington. Take the A596 north towards Maryport.

At Maryport turn right onto the A594 south towards Cockermouth.

At Papcastle Roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A595 to re-join the A66 at Fitz Roundabout

Westbound - Follow the solid circle symbol. At the Fitz Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A594 north towards Maryport.

At Papcastle roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A594 north.

At Maryport turn left onto the A596 south to re-join the A66 at Workington.
