Egremont Town Council has introduced a new Citizens’ award this year, to reward and acknowledge the work that an outstanding group has done in its community.

In addition to the annual individual good Citizens’ award, which this year went to Ruth Banks who was given the honour for her hard work volunteering and promoting Egremont farmers’ market, the council decided that an extra award was needed in order to reward the bowling club organisation.

Councillor Neil Ferguson presented the new good citizens’ award to the club for the work it has done to the bowling green, for attracting new members and for helping to organise the inter-school tournament.

The bowling green has recently been given a facelift, by work from the probation service, with equipment supplied by Egremont Town Council.

The bowling green committee is delighted with the results which has enhanced the grounds that are meticulously kept by club president Alan Hall and groundsman Ken Amor.

Members of the public can visit the grounds at Howbank Road, Smithfield, Egremont, and see the green, surrounded by beautifully kept beds with quirky touches, plenty of seating and a bright pavilion where refreshments can be bought.

A spokesman for Egremont Town Council said: “The council is very proud to have such a delightful facility in their parish and are pleased to work in partnership with Egremont Bowling Club who do a fantastic job of keeping the green in a tip top condition, we also wish to thank the probation service for the sterling work they carried out, it was very much appreciated by all.”

A further accolade to add to this club’s increasing achievements was their outstanding marks at the recent Cumbria in Bloom presentation.

The bowling club were awarded 96/100 marks in the special category nominations by the judges who were very impressed with the green and Egremont Town Council also wish to pass on their congratulations to this well deserving committee.
