The Lad Barbers in Egremont has held its fifth free haircut day, and raised £1,000 for West Cumberland Hospital’s Henderson Suite.

This latest event is personal for owner Gary Sommerville, who said two of his family members, his mother and grandmother are receiving treatment for cancer at the Henderson Suite.

Around 120 turned up last Friday to help with the fundraising.

Gary said: “With donations and raffle tickets the total amount came to just under £800 so I’ve added to that to make it £1,000.”

His sister, Kelly Kirkbride and her daughter, Chloe Sommerville, both work in the shop and Gary and Kelly’s mother, Jacquline Milton, manages the shop.

Gary said: “We are a very close family, there’s not a day goes by where we don’t speak to each other.“This has obviously affected the whole family and we felt like we should do something to raise money to go to the Henderson suite.

“I’m blown away by the generosity of everyone in our local community from the people who donated their money to the local businesses that donated some amazing prizes, I’d just like to say thank you.”

Kelly said: “Thank you everyone for coming and making this a good day and thank you to the staff at the Henderson suite for doing such an amazing job.”

Jacquline added: “Thank you to everyone who donated and a special thank you to the staff at the Henderson suite.”

Gary’s niece, Chloe, said: “I’m so happy to have been able to do something that helps The Henderson Suite. They have been looking after my two nannas.”

The shop has started a loyalty card scheme where every fifth haircut will see money put back into the community.

They are asking for ideas on how this community pot could be spent. Contact Lad barber Egremont Facebook page with any ideas.
