Residents are invited to get involved with an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ Day in Whitehaven next year.

Councillor Allan Forster, Copeland Council’s Armed Forces Champion, is leading the arrangements for the event to honour the armed forces community past and present.

The event will take place on Saturday, August 15 and will start with a parade from the Copeland Centre, Catherine Street, to the war memorial at Castle Park for a short service.

The parade will then continue to St Nicholas’ Gardens where there will be music, stalls and children’s activities.

Coun Allan Forster said: “It’s the first time we have organised an event to mark VJ Day locally, and we have already received a great deal of support from the Royal British Legion, volunteers and performers who will entertain the crowds in St Nicholas’ Gardens.”

“If you’d like to volunteer to support the parade or take a stall at St Nicholas, we’d love to hear from you.

“We really want to create a family atmosphere, while never forgetting our armed forces’ contribution to the war effort and to show our eternal gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice.”

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, added: “The parade and event will bring the community together and has the full support of Copeland Council.

“I’d like to congratulate Councillor Forster on all his hard work in organising the event so far, and I’m sure it will be a resounding success.
