A sleeping family was saved from a kitchen fire thanks to their smoke alarms.

A grill pan caught fire inside a cooker in the kitchen of a home in Thomlinson Avenue, on Carlisle's Raffles estate, setting off the alarms at about 3am today.

The family managed to get outside and call 999.

Crews from both Carlisle's east and west fire stations attended and removed the grill pan.

They were on scene for about 45 minutes.

A spokesman for Carlisle west fire station said: "This incident highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in your homes.

"We would encourage everybody to not only ensure they have smoke alarms fitted, but also to check them regularly."
