A WEST End star has visited a Carlisle dance school to lead a Lion King-themed workshop.

Tamara McKoy-Patterson travelled up to Cumbria on Tuesday to give a group of young performers a unique insight into the world of performing arts.

The 38-year-old, who also appeared as a dancer in the hit film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again last year, led the masterclass with aspiring young performers from Razzamataz Theatre Schools Carlisle at Harraby Community Theatre.

During her day of teaching at the group’s summer school, Tamara shared some of the famous songs and dancers from the family musical.

In her time on the West End, Tamara performed in The Lion King and Mary Poppins.

She told the News & Star: “The Lion King is a wonderful show where children can examine the motivation and development behind each character.

“The music is world famous and the story resonates with every age group, making them laugh and cry in equal measures.

“As well as it being lots of fun, the story has many positive messages for children and it is a pleasure to share them with the students of Razzamataz.”

The workshop forms part of week-long set of classes in dance drama, organised by Debbie Mitchell, principal of Razzamataz Carlisle.

Debbie added: “All the guest teachers who come to put on workshops are very generous with their time and give the students the opportunity to ask questions about working in the industry.

“Not only does this give our students practical advice, but it is also very inspirational to have this level of support available.”

At the end of the week, the children will get the opportunity to perform their showcase to friends and families.

“The performing arts is a lovely way for children to improve their confidence, make new friends and have lots of fun and we hope that with our classes in dance, drama and singing, we can inspire children to take part in the summer school even if they have never had any performing arts training before,” Debbie added.
