People are being encouraged to join a West Cumbrian choir to improve their health and make new friends.

Whitehaven Male Voice Choir is looking for new members, and it has highlighted the findings of a number of doctors who have linked singing to improved health and well-being.

Some physicians have gone so far as to prescribe singing as an alternative to some medications, and say they see patients less often if they are involved in the musical hobby because of the benefits it brings.

Benefits that have been linked to singing include improved heart rates, blood pressure and mood, because of the emotional expression and regulation it involves.

Whitehaven Male Voice Choir rehearses on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Gregory and St Patrick's Church, Quay Street.

It has raised thousands of pounds for local charities through its performances.
