Emergency services including police, paramedics, and the air ambulance were called to the westbound dual carriageway at 4.53pm on Thursday afternoon.
Eye-witnesses reported seeing a grey Ford Focus pulled over close to the central reservation just before the entry sliproad from the A6.
The driver, a 61-year-old man from Grange, was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by the Great North Air Ambulance.
Police said yesterday that he remained in hospital in a critical condition.
