A campaign to raise funds for repairs to a West Cumbrian cinema has exceeded its target in just two weeks.

The Alhambra Cinema in Keswick created a crowdfunding page to help raise funds to restore the antique radiators and tin panelling around the walls, with a target of £9,000.

The crowdfunding page is currently at over £11,000 so they are now well on their way to reach a further target of £15,000 which will also enable them to invest in lighting.

The century-old single-screen picture house will close on June 11 until July 2 while the auditorium is refurbished, taking it back to the original heritage green colour that was found on the back screen walls.

Carol Rennie and Alan Hasler said they have been blown away by the response to their campaign.

They said: "We are all totally overwhelmed with the response - especially all the love that radiates from the comments that supporters have left on the crowdfunder website - it feels such an honour to be stewarding such a well-loved Keswick institution!"

They say that the strongest response has come from their loyal customer base, people on their mailing list and who regularly visit the Alhambra - including both locals and visitors.

But Carol and Alan have also been surprised at donations from visitors that have only visited them once and who want to express their support for independent, characterful cinemas, like those they remember from their youth.

Carol said of the refurbished interior: "It will certainly give people the 'wow' factor when they walk in to the newly-lit up, gloriously repainted auditorium, and I'm sure our reputation will grow as a result."
