A female motorcyclist continues to fight for her life following a serious crash near Bassenthwaite.

The 25-year-old, from Wigton, was airlifted to hospital in Newcastle following the collision on the A591.

The two-vehicle crash happened on Tuesday morning, near to the Castle Inn.

Cumbria Police have described her condition as "critical but stable".

The road was closed for five hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The crash also involved a car, driven by a man, from Leicester.

The female motorcyclist was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where she is continuing to receive treatment.

Cumbria Police said the family of the woman have been informed.

There were no other injuries.

Officers closed the road between the Castle Inn and the Bassenthwaite junction while a forensic collision investigation took place.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said they were called at 11.18am.

"We had a doctor and paramedic onboard and we flew to the scene. We took 12 minutes to arrive and treated a patient, before we then airlifted her to hospital for further care," he added.
