MORE electric car charging points are being rolled out across the Lake District to cut carbon emissions in the fight against climate change.

Eight new points are being introduced by the Lake District National Park Authority.

Coniston’s TIC boating centre – run by the LDNPA is to get them – as will the car park at the independently-run tourist information centre.

The LDNPA is also installing them on Glenridding car park, near Ullswater, close to its tourist information centre.

Grasmere’s electric charging point will go at the LDNPA’s Stock Lane car park.

The national park authority said the new points would service eight spaces.

It said: “We are working with Pod Point to install electric vehicle charging point. They will service eight spaces across our car parks, bringing in a small income in the short term, and will all be installed and working for June 19.”

An electric charging point has also been installed at its northern office at Threlkeld, Keswick.

Simon Hill, the LDNPA’s car parks manager, said across the park, there are 30 charge points and the target for the year 2040 is to have 60 in place.

The park has a “transport vision for 2040” that as a minimum, the percentage of visitors arriving by car will decrease from 83 percent in 2015 to 64 percent.

It would also like to see car use more than halved as the main mode of travel for visitors around the Lake District within the next 21 years.
