The Lake District Wildlife Park has two new additions to its residents list.

Ahead of World Otter Day on May 29, the park has introduced its latest pairing of otters, Cogee and Amber, to visitors for the first time.

Cogee, is a nine year old Asian short-clawed otter which has joined the park's resident female, Amber, from Blair Drummond Safari Park in Scotland, after Amber's previous partner passed away in 2018.

The pair have taken an instant attraction to one another and are living in a newly renovated enclosure at the wildlife park near Keswick.

Preparations to mark World Otter Day are underway at the attraction with a series of activities planned to celebrate the playful personalities and behaviours of these popular and photogenic creatures.

Plans include quizzes and information about all 13 species of otters worldwide, as well as daily otter feedings - which are five times a day to maintain their energy levels and an otter talk.

Lauren Pickthall, the park’s carnivore keeper said: “Cogee is adapting into his new surroundings very well. He took his bedding and moved in with Amber straight away, so they immediately struck up a good rapport and we are hopeful they will mate in the future.

“It is great timing as otters continue to be one of the most asked-about animals at the park, which is no surprise as they are very intelligent and always up to mischief!"

The park said that introducing a new otter in the run-up to World Otter Day gives them a great opportunity to help people to better understand their natural habitats, the threats they face in the wild and the positive news about the recent recovery of otter populations in the UK.
