A DEFENDANT appeared in court charged assaulting a woman, of damaging a wing mirror and of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

Jared Granville Nuttall, 45, was charged with assaulting Jodie Thompson, of damaging a wing mirror belonging to her valuing £40 and of causing her harassment, alarm or distress by using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

The assault charge was dropped as no evidence was offered.

Nuttall, of South Street in Carlisle, pleaded guilty to the criminal damage charge having previously pleaded not guilty.

They also admitted the charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

All three charges related to August 15.

On his appearance before Carlisle's magistrates court on Monday Nuttall was fined a total of £275, told to pay compensation of £40, was ordered to pay a £30 surcharge to fund victim services and was told to pay costs of £300 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Nuttall was also given a restraining order which prohibits any contact with Jodie Thompson indirectly or directly, with the exception of through the family courts or via a solicitor for child-related proceedings.

The order will last until November 11.
