A person was airlifted to hospital after a bungalow fire.
Fire crews and police are still at the scene at Bridge End, Egremont, and the pathway leading past the rugby union club at Bleach Green has been cordoned off.
The fire was reported just before 2pm.
An air ambulance landed at the rugby union ground while a patient was loaded in.
A dog walker who uses the path every day said: "There's a big hole in the roof of the bungalow.
It's a shock - I hope everyone involved is okay."
A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "We attended an incident in Egremont earlier in support of emergency services. We sent out an aircraft from Langwathby near Penrith. We airlifted a patient to hospital for treatment."
