A BARROW man has been found dead in Walney Channel.

Police have confirmed that a report was made at noon on Tuesday April 23 regarding concerns for the welfare of a 24-year-old man. 

A search was carried out involving the coastguard was also involved. 

The man's body was found and he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

A spokesman for police said: "Cumbria Police were contacted yesterday at around midday regarding concern for safety of a man aged in his mid-20s from the Barrow area.

"A search was carried out and the man was located on the coastline area of Walney Channel.

"He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and the family have been informed."

Eye-witnesses had reported seeing a large police presence and a lifeboat crew at the scene close to where Teasdale Road meets the channel. 

Emergency services are understood to have been at the scene for around four hours.
