A WILDLIFE trust is calling on the public to help rebuild Cumbria's hedgehog population.

In a touching video Cumbria Wildlife Trust asked 50 people when was the last time they had seen a hedgehog in the wild as part of an appeal.

62 per cent of those questioned in the video had not seen a hedgehog in the last 12 months whilst 18 per cent said they had not seen a hedgehog in 10 years.

The video also stated that hedgehogs had decreased by 30 per cent in the last 10 years and there are now thought to be less than one million hedgehogs left in the UK.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Wildlife Trust said: "We’ve lost a third of all our hedgehogs since the millennium.

"No wonder we just don't see them much anymore."
