A 20-year-old Carlisle man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police have confirmed they were called to a report of an assault involving two men on Dalston Road in the city, just after 3am yesterday.
Officers say a 43-year-old man, who is not from Cumbria, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries caused by a bladed article.
A Cumbria police spokesman described him as being in a stable condition, adding that his injuries were not believed to be life-changing.
The 20-year old man remained in police custody this morning.
