PUPILS at Mayfield School wowed the audience at their special musical performance.

Children at the school spent two weeks taking part in a range of activities to learn about musicals and musical theatre, which culminated in the show.

Mamma Mia, The Lion King, Grease, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Wizard of Oz were just a few of the musicals performed.

Assistant headteacher Carolyn Westnedge said: “The atmosphere in the school was amazing. The show went really well and the feedback from parents and other spectators was really good. All the students took part and they really enjoyed it.”

Mayfield pupils took part in a range of activities to learn about all aspects of theatre, including make-up design and set design ahead of the performance. They also went on trips to different charities and groups to learn about different aspects of musical theatre.

Miss Westnedge said the school did not have a Christmas production because pupils moved from their old base to the new Campus Whitehaven and they decided to do this show after the students had settled in the school.

Other schools also went to the new Campus Whitehaven to join in the session with Mayfield students.

She added: “In the workshops there was something for everybody and the feedback has been really good from the students, the staff and the people who visited. We got to make connections with other schools and they all said they want to come back to work with us. I’m very proud of our children – they were amazing.”

Miss Westnedge said: “It can be hard for some of our children because it takes them out of their routine, for others it’s easier. But joining in activities they are interested in it enables us to engage them more and go out of their comfort zone.”
