Different denominations will unite together on Good Friday when the Whitehaven Mission Community perform the final days of Jesus Christ.

The Passion Play will take place in Whitehaven town centre and depicts in five scenes the Passion of Jesus Christ - his suffering and death.

The free street theatre will be acted by members of local churches, who have been practising the play for several weeks.

Revd Robert Jackson, Rector of Whitehaven St James, said: "It's not going to be Eastenders - we're amateurs, but this year we wanted to do something more special."

Around 15 actors will perform the Passion Play, which has been directed by James Last.

The story will begin with the Palm Sunday scene, acted in the Market Place, Whitehaven at 11.30am.

Scene two takes place at The Hub on the harbour with the garden of Gethsemane.

The third scene will be back at the Market Place and show Caiaphas' house.

Scene four, at the crossing outside of Burton's, will show Jesus before Pontius Pilate.

The final scene - the crucifixion - will take place at the front of St Nicholas' Gardens at 12.30pm, accompanied by Whitehaven Brass Band.

After the play there will be a short service and free hot cross buns available.

The mission community in Whitehaven welcomes different denominations into one community to come together for various events.
