A mechanical roller was stolen after it was left chained to a lamppost on an industrial estate.
Cumbria police are investigating the theft of the push-along roller, which was taken from Cleator Moor Industrial Estate overnight.
A force spokesman said the Bomag vibrating roller was stolen between 5pm yesterday, Wednesday, April 10, and 6.30am today, Thursday, April 11.
Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to call PC 2676 Evans on 101.
Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The spokesman added: "Police would like to remind people to be vigilant about leaving property out in the open."
