IT’S the Easter holidays, and as spring finally makes an appearance, there are tons of places to spend your time.

Here in Cumbria, there are a number of places to visit in the north and west of the county.

This week, the News & Star asked readers to recommend their favourite places to take the kids at this time of year.

There were a huge number of responses from readers right across the area.

In no particular order, here are the best places, as voted for by you, the readers.

1: AIRA FORCE, NEAR LAKE ULLSWATER

The waterfall, located just off Lake Ullswater, has been an attraction for visitors for 300 years.

The rainwater runs from the fells into Aira Beck and over in one 65-foot leap over the fells.

For those who fancy to venture further, a network of trails start from Ullswater lakeshore and head up to Gowbarrow summit, passing a number of picnic spots, and offering views out across the Lake.

This day out was recommended by Nicky Booth.

2: RAVENGLASS AND ESKDALE RAILWAY

Spanning seven miles in the west of Cumbria, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, known to many as La’al Ratty (little railway), it is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England.

The journey takes 40 minutes each way from Ravenglass and passes seven intermediate request stops.

The main season runs from March until October.

Reader Emma Louise recommended this day out.

3: MUNCASTER CASTLE

Situated among the western fells of the Lake District, Muncaster Castle was recommended to us by Gillian Hands.

She said: “The bird of prey display is amazing and you can watch herons being fed, huge gardens, interesting shrubs, haunted castle.”

4: PARK FOOT PONY TRECKING, ULLSWATER

For those wanting to try something different this half term, Park Foot Pony Trecking, situated on Howtown Road at Pooley Bridge the edge of Lake Ullswater, provides the opportunity to do some pony trekking in the countryside.

The pony treks are supervised and open to both learners and experienced riders.

5: BLENCOGO FARM ALPACAS, WIGTON

Another fun experience for the family during the Easter holidays is Blencogo Farm Alpacas, based in Wigton.

The alpaca fleece is put to good use, with much of it turned into yarn and then crocheted or knitted up into alpaca clothing and accessories.

6: LAKE DISTRICT COAST AQUARIUM, MARYPORT

The aquarium, which opened in 1997, offers daily fish feeding, talks and plenty of chances to see the fish and learn more.

Marta Hanlon said: “I took my kids to Maryport Aquarium on Tuesday. They both loved it.

“Lovely staff and great cafe, which caters for allergies and food intolerances.”

Paul Wright added: “Maryport aquarium is excellent.

“I went a while back and the place really is not done justice by its website etc. Great place to go.”
