A REGENERATION boss welcomed planned investment in Kimberly-Clark’s paper mill in Barrow but voiced concerns about how it could impact on jobs.

Carl Bevan, chair of the Furness Economic Development Forum (FEDF), told The Mail that Kimberly-Clark’s pledge to invest £95.4m into its sites at Barrow and Northfleet in Kent would provide “longevity” for the mill in Park Road.

But he added that FEDF – which plays a leading role in supporting businesses in the region and lobbying for investment – would be closely monitoring the sting in the tail delivered by the company; that up to 20 jobs could go at the Barrow site.

The improvements to efficiency are expected to result in the loss of between 110 and 130 jobs at Northfleet and up to 20 at Barrow.

“I think we should reflect with cautious optimism on the investment in the Barrow plant and the certainty and longevity that this should provide for the majority of the workforce,” Mr Bevan said.

“Any risk to jobs, however small, is of course a concern and we must be empathetic for all who may be at risk.

“The process will be the process and it is important to understand the detail when known and the possible consequences.”

Mr Bevan added: “FEDF will clearly be watching developments closely and will continue to play its part in lobbying for monies to see investment in the A590 that will help with supply chain efficiency; allowing Kimberly-Clark’s global products to reach retail distribution centres without delay.”

His sentiments echo those voiced by Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock, who described the investment as “a huge vote of confidence” in the plant and its workforce, but described the prospect of job losses as “concerning”.

Kimberly-Clark said the investment would “drive manufacturing efficiency and long-term, sustainable growth”.

Both the Barrow and Northfleet sites produce Kimberly-Clark’s Andrex and WypAll products.

There are currently around 380 employees based at the Barrow mill.
