An Ambleside guest house has won the coveted Green Tourism Silver award just two years after new owners took over.

Haven Cottage is run by Chris and Allie Hodgson who formerly had a ski chalet business in the Alps. Since moving to Ambleside they have made determined efforts to run a sustainable business.

The Green Tourism assessor said that they were off to a very good start.

“Over the coming year the business can build upon this and look to target the next award level," it said. "The owners are clearly very green aware and do a lot to support the community through direct involvement or helping to raise funds for projects.

“There are already a number of green initiatives in place at the site. The bigger impacts are under control due to very efficient appliances, widespread use of LED lights, an A‐rated boiler and a green electricity tariff.”

He added guests are treated to local food and drinks as part of the menu, giving a real taste of the Lakes, while waste minimisation works effectively diverting most away from landfill.

The owners also support the Lake District Foundation by fund-raising, and Chris, who is one of the organisers of the annual Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay Race, said that he and Allie were very pleased with the award.

"We are very committed to being a green business and passionate about supporting local Cumbrian suppliers even if it costs a little more money," he said. "We believe this gives guests a better-quality product, it re-invests money into the economy, and it helps limit our impact on the environment by cutting transport mileage.”
