One of the founding members of the UTC movement has visited West Cumbria.
Lord Baker, who is chair and co-founder of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, a charity which was formed in 2009 to promote UTCs, came to the Energy Coast UTC where he enjoyed a tour of the facilities and met pupils who have taken a step towards careers in engineering.
Lord Baker met Energy Coast UTC principal Cherry Tingle, chair of the board of governors Barbara Stephens OBE and vice-chair of the board of governors and head of education and skills at Sellafield Dr Donna Connor about how the UTC can develop.
He also spoke with two directors of Simon Smith, managing director of infrastructure at Morgan Sindall, and nuclear operations director Andy Crowder. Morgan Sindall is a partner of the UTC and supports the school financially as well as working with the pupils to give them engineering experience.
Cherry Tingle said: "We were absolutely delighted that Lord Baker, one of the founder members of the UTC movement, chose to visit us.
"Students and staff alike were thrilled to work with him and he was particularly impressed by our students academic results and knowledge and by the very large number of students from the UTC who gain high quality apprenticeships."
