VIKINGS swords and Anglo-Saxons shields clashed together in York this afternoon as they prepare for a major battle tonight.

The event was just one of several displays going on around the city today to celebrate the York Viking festival.

Crowds gathered to watch the reenactment and learn about how armies fought against one another during the Viking age.

The battle came after an army of Viking Warriors had marched from Deans Park, through the streets of York, towards Coppergate.

It is thought the festival, which is celebrating its 35th year, has drawn in crowds of over 6,000 people.

Steven Jones, from Liverpool, said that this was his sixth year at the event.

He said: "We always come up and enjoy the weekend.

"It is a brilliant spectacle and something the kids really enjoy, especially the strongest Viking."

Earlier today, individuals had battled it out in St Sampsons square to see who was the strongest Viking.

This year Norse warrior women have been leading the way as the event explores the untold stories of the women of the age.

The Shield Maidens were in action during a battle recreation, and also joined the March to Coppergate.

Marketing manager, Beth Dawes said: “In the last 12 months, we’ve seen huge celebration of women gaining the vote in England, following centuries of having limited rights compared to their male counterparts, but many people will be surprised to learn that Viking women held many rights – including the right to own and inherit land – that were washed away by the Norman invasion, not to be regained for another eight or nine hundred years."

However, if you have missed the action today fear not, as the Eye of York will be transformed this evening into spectacular battle at Fólkvangr Fields followed by a firework show to finish off the day.
