PLANS to build a further 15 homes on a site in Botcherby have been given the go-ahead.

Housing developer Taylor Wimpey was given the news to extend the Meadowbrook estate at the latest meeting of the Carlisle's development committee on Friday.

The properties will be built on land to the south of Durranhill Road, across from Barley Edge, Botcherby, Carlisle.

At the meeting, Botcherby councillor Robert Betton claimed that Durranhill Road, outside the site, was a death trap, and raised concerns over an unsafe crossing for school children who live in and outside the estate, with cars travelling at an excessive speed on the road.

Mr Betton, who supported the plans for further housing, also called on the developers to build the pedestrian infrastructure surrounding the estate, to ensure the safety of younger residents heading to and from school.

Councillor Raymond Tinnion, who also welcomed the development, added: "Why do we have to wait until the houses are built before these [traffic measures] are put in?"

Jane Meek, Carlisle City Council's corporate director of economic development, said it was up to Highways to put the traffic measures in place.

The plans were approved with conditions.
