Police say a local woman involved in a two-car crash on the A595 near Egremont last week is no longer in a critical condition.

The 59-year-old was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a critical but stable condition after her Ford Ka was in collision with another car last Wednesday.

A police spokesman said: "The condition of the injured driver has improved and she is no longer critical."

The other driver, a 41-year-old local woman, was treated for injuries at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Part of the major route was closed after the collision at Clint's Brow.

Two fire crews attended and used hydraulic equipment to rescue one person who was trapped. The casualty was then handed into the care of paramedics.

The road was closed in both directions, between Egremont and Bigrigg, for six hours.

A diversion was put in place and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
