A rugby league club has raised more than £10,000 to help people with Parkinson’s by completing a charity walk.

Egremont Rangers took part in a Walk for Parkinson’s event which saw all 30 of the club’s ladies travel about 10 miles for Parkinson’s UK.

The group started their trek at Kells ARLFC then moved to Hensingham and Wath Brow Hornets before completing the final stretch of their journey to Egremont Rangers.

Allan Bewsher, who has raised money for the club and has been managing his Parkinson’s for two years now, was the inspiration for the event.

He added: “Raising £10,000 in one day is fantastic.

“A big thank you to Paula Brocklebank for organising it and a huge thank you to all the contributions that have come in from far and wide.”

Paula added: “I am delighted by the amount raised but not surprised at the Cumbrian generosity.

“It was amazing and as we walked people were stopping us and handing money over.

“It’s been a great day, for a great cause, and a staggering amount raised, exceeding our target with an estimated £10,000.

“Thank you to all for donating and sponsoring such a worthy cause.

“A special thanks must go to all the ladies who completed the walk as without them we could not have raised the amount we did.”

The walk incorporated the local rugby clubs, who kindly hosted the ladies and made contributions to the fundraising on the way round to play their part.

Mark Chorley, who is chairman of Egremont Rangers, said: “Watching the ladies walk in their blue tops with ‘Walking for Parkinson’s’ printed on made me feel very proud.”

Ian Rooney, from Wath Brow, added: “This shows just how well the rugby community comes together.

“It’s a great cause and we were happy to help out.”

The event touched a lot of people and even the local shoot clubs, which Allan’s son Peter is a member of, contributed more than £2,000 to the good cause.
