A specialist Cumbrian police team that focuses on internet child abuse cases has vowed to bring offenders in the county to justice.

Detective Sergeant James Bailey, of the force’s digital media investigation unit, commented after a Carlisle Crown Court judge imposed a suspended jail term on a man whose crimes were exposed thanks to a tip-off.

John George Ritson, 40, of Newton Arlosh, was brought to justice after detectives were told that child abuse images were being accessed over the internet from his home.

Detective sergeant Ritson said: “Our officers in this unit specialise in catching those who are committing these crimes – and Ritson is the latest to face prosecution for his actions.

“We will do everything in our power to bring those committing these offences to justice.

“We encourage anyone who has any suspicions of anything of this nature to contact us on 101.”

Ritson was arrested on February 6 last year on suspicion of making indecent images of children.

Detectives seized internet linked devices for forensic examination after raiding his home.

Charges followed the inquiry and Ritson later admitted two counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo photograph of a child.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Judge James Adkin imposed a a 12 month jail term, suspended for two years. Ritson must also carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community.
