Maryport’s only public toilets will be repaired and cleaned.

That is the promise from Allerdale council after town councillors complained about the state of the toilets located in the Irish Street car park.

Town chairman Peter Kendall said: “If Allerdale council is maintaining these toilets then they have to be of a standard suitable for visitors to the town.”

He said a toilet seat in the men’s toilets was broken and a window cracked. The toilet was also in need of a deep clean.

On the women’s side the inside door handle was missing.

“Instead there is a chain, like the ones used to flush old fashioned toilets, nailed to the door. It doesn’t look good for visitors.

“There are clean toilets across the road at the Wave but if Allerdale is maintaining these ones they must be done properly.”

Although they are regularly cleaned, the borough council is asking anyone who notices damage or problems with the toilets to get in touch with them.

A spokeswoman said: “Allerdale council will be looking into the issues raised by the town council regarding the public toilets on Irish Street.

“Each item will be addressed and resolved as necessary.

Members of the public are advised to report any issues with these toilets directly to Allerdale Borough Council on 0303 123 1702.
