Cumbria has experienced its coldest night of the year, with the temperature in some parts of the county plunging as low as -10C.

That was the temperature recorded overnight at Shap - only 2.7C above the lowest UK temperature that was recorded at Loch Glascarnoch in central Highlands of Scotland.

In Carlisle, the overnight temperature dipped to -4C.

Forecaster Mark Wilson, from the Met Office, confirmed that the cold spell is set to continue, though today is likely to be dry in Cumbria without any fresh sleet or snow falling.

"Daytime temperatures will struggle," he said.

"We're likely to see temperatures in Cumbria of 2C to 3C at best, but it looks like it will be pretty dry in your neck of the woods. It will remain dry throughout the day. But the roads will be very frosty, so our advice [to drivers] is to take care."

He said the cold snap - which is not that unusual for the time of year - is likely to last two or three days."

Meanwhile, Cumbria Police reported this morning that Honister Pass at Buttermere is closed due to snow between the Seathwaite turnoff and Keswick.

The Cold Fell Road near Ennerdale is also closed due to snow, as is the Newlands Pass at Braithwaite, near Keswick.
