A unique series of forest 10k runs has been launched, and one of them will be held at Whinlatter.

The Forestry Commission has launched the Forestry 100 Running series which will take place across 16 locations in England.

The series allows people to experience the freedom, fresh air and scenery of running in the nation’s forests.

Runners can take part in a single event, or take on the Forestry 100 Challenge and run 100km of forest trails throughout the series.

The Whinlatter Forest run on May 12 will allow runners to enjoy views from England's only true mountain forest, with the chance to catch a glimpse of red squirrels, roe deer and perhaps even ospreys.

The full programme of runs is: Bedgebury, the National Pinetum - March 31, Hamsterley Forest - April 7, Whinlatter Forest - May 12. Dalby Forest - May 19, Cannock Chase - May 25, Wyre Forest - June 8, Alice Holt - June 16, Haldon Forest Park - June 23, Wendover Woods - June 30, Forest of Dean - September 8, Westonbirt, the National Arboretum - September 14, High Lodge, Thetford Forest - October 6, Salcey Forest - October 12, Sherwood Pines - October 20, Thames Chase - November 10, and Jeskyns Woods - December 7.
