A NUMBER of summer activities are being planned for Whitehaven in a bid to "bring in the crowds".

Whitehaven Town Council is currently organising a programme of family events to be held in St Nicholas' Gardens.

It will include a photographic exhibition, with a mix of old and new photos of the town, and a paper aeroplane competition.

Model building and a Cumbrian traders will also feature as part of the town council's plans to entice people back into the town centre.

Further details are due to be released next month.

Mayor of Whitehaven, Graham Roberts, said: "I’m delighted with the plans that the council has come up with for the summer. I hope it will bring lots of people into the town centre to enjoy what is a beautiful and unique town."

Local businessman, Gerard Richardson, said: "I’m delighted with this announcement because Whitehaven is at its best when there are events on for families to enjoy. It shows a real determination by the Town Council to enhance our lovely town. As a paper aeroplane fan and grandfather of eight, I’ll certainly be entering that one."
