A COCKERMOUTH choir will be celebrating Burns' Night next week and singing some of his poems before enjoying a meal.

Cockermouth Harmonic Society will perform work by Robert Burns at the United Reformed Church.

"In a departure from our usual concerts, we are celebrating the 260th anniversary of the poet’s birth," said member Hilary Tattershall.

"We will mark it in traditional and non-traditional ways. We will be singing some exquisite versions of Burns’ poems - some you will know, some you may not."

After the concert there will be a Burns’ Night supper, which is included in the cost of the tickets.

Ian Wright will conduct the choir, local mezzo soprano Anne-Marie Kerr, and accompanist Amanda Wright.

Tickets (£18, free for full-time students) must be bought in advance. They are available from Billy Bowman’s music shop in Lowther Went or contact Janet Johnston - 01900 825083 or ticketsales@cockermouthharmonic.org.uk.

The concert will start at 7pm on Friday, January 26.

The choir has 60 members and has been singing for more than 150 years, making it one of the oldest choirs in the country.
