A man rescued from a fell in awful weather conditions suffered suspected hypothermia.

Volunteer members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were called out to help two men on the summit of Pillar.

The rescue took place on Saturday night and came despite a plea for people to stay off the fells because of the snow and ice brought in on the back of Storm Deidre.

A warning is in place today for icy ground on the Cumbrian fells.

Of the Pillar rescue, Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team posted on Facebook: "Things can go wrong much more quickly in cold windy conditions than in the summer, so please do make sure you’re ready to cope with it."

The post added: "The warnings yesterday were to stay off the fells unless you had the skills, equipment and experience to cope with the conditions - but sometimes people still misjudge it, or something goes wrong during the day."
