MEMBERS of The Beacon Museum’s Quantum Leap club in Whitehaven have been presented with an environmental award.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, handed over the John Muir Awards to the 29 club members, all aged between seven and 13.

The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme that highlights the protection of local wild habitats and spaces. The Solway coastline and Whitehaven harbour were the focus for the participants.

The children participated in various activities throughout the year as part of the programme, such as recycled craft activities, willow weaving and fossil digging. Their crafty creations have also gone on display in the museum’s popular viewing gallery until spring 2019.

Alan Gillon, Learning Officer at The Beacon Museum, said: “Due to popular demand, next year the Quantum Leap club will be expanding.

“We will be creating two groups that will be more age specific and hopefully the children will get even more from the programme as it evolves.

“Our 2019 group will take part in the Arts Award programme, which encourages the children to explore local history, people and science through art. They will be expressing what they learn through lots of different fun activities throughout the year.”
