A WELL-KNOWN teacher who taught in Cleator Moor for over 30 years has died.

Kathleen Gaffney, 88, who was born in Cleator Moor, spent 34 years working at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School.

She discovered her love of teaching through helping her Aunt Mamie, a former headmistress at St Patrick’s, during her school holidays.

Mrs Gaffney attended Whitehaven Grammar and studied at Fenham College, Newcastle, before returning to West Cumbria for a short spell at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Frizington.

She then took up her post at St Patrick’s in Cleator Moor.

After retiring, she still enjoyed taking pupils for extra lessons and preparing local children for their First Holy Communion.

Kathleen was married to Tom Gaffney. She leaves four children and seven grandchildren.
