Cumbria's new fleet of gritters are on standby - ready to tackle this week's freezing weather.

Snow, freezing rain and gale-force winds are possible over the weekend the Met Office has warned.

As temperatures drop below the seasonal average, a forecaster from the Met Office reported that Saturday will have freezing rain and gale-force winds along the coast and a chance of transient snow on higher ground.

With this warning of snow there is also a risk of freezing rain which could impair driving conditions over higher grounds and across the county.

Cumbria County Council is checking the weather daily ready to deploy the gritters and keep all priority routes clear and, wherever possible, these roads will be gritted by 8am. Penrith and Appleby will see the gritters out on pre-salting patrol over the next few days.
