One man has been charged after police officers targeted workers travelling to Sellafield as part of a Christmas campaign.

Cumbria Police teamed up with colleagues from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and Sellafield Ltd for two days of breath testing.

It was organised to coincide with the start of Cumbria Police's Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.

Sergeant Graham Hawley said: “We will continue to target drink and drug drivers across Cumbria and look out for anyone who is unfit to drive a vehicle.”

On both days, educational messages were given out and breath tests conducted. Private vehicles were stopped on the access roads to all the entrance gates to the site on December 4. No arrests were made.

On December 5, officers stopped contractor vans as they entered the site. One man was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit and has been charged.

No further arrests were made.
