A Christmas tree festival raised £1,000 for a church near Cockermouth and a charity.

Members of St Barnabas Church, Setmurthy, organised the festival at Higham Hall, to raise funds for the church and West Cumbria Hospice at Home.

There was a selection of trees, donated by Moota Garden Centre and decorated by various local groups and people, including Bassenthwaite School and Mothers' Union and Setmurthy Craft Group.

Church warden Elizabeth Marrs said: "The trees were lovely, everyone enjoyed looking at them.

"We asked people to create their interpretations of Christmas and the designs were really varied and beautiful.

"There was a striking Remembrance Tree decorated with only poppies. Church member Anne Richardson did a lovely Twelve Days of Christmas tree."

A wreath-making workshop proved popular, as did an evening of Christmas songs and carols, mince pies, homebaking and drinks.

The organisers are grateful to Higham Hall. "It's the perfect venue in the most perfect setting, they are very supportive of the local community," said Mrs Marrs.

The church is looking into installing disabled access. It was also keen to help another charity.

"Hospice is a wonderful local service and touches so many people. We were keen to support it," said Mrs Marrs.
