A VISIT from a councillor gave sea cadets a confidence boost.

Copeland councillor David Moore spent an evening chatting with members of Whitehaven Sea Cadets as well as presenting them with various awards.

Mr Moore, leader of Copeland's conservative group, said: "My congratulations to all of you on your standard of dress and conduct, and special congratulations to those who received awards. I did not realise there were so many activities open to you and encourage you to take advantage of them. The skills you learn as part of the sea cadets will not only give a good foundation for your future, but will stay with you for life.”

The unit's commanding officer, Petty Officer (SCC) Stuart McCourt said: “Having visits from local dignitaries such as Councillor Moore gives our cadets experience of meeting and speaking with VIPs, and that helps build their confidence.

"It is also important for the unit as it gives us the opportunity to talk about what we do, and what we can offer our cadets.”
