Police have recovered a car they suspect was involved in a cash machine raid this morning.

Cumbria police appealed for help to trace the Jeep Cherokee after raiders used a JCB to remove the cash machine from the Spar at Richmond, Hensingham, in Whitehaven.

The force has now confirmed that the vehicle has been found.

A spokesman said: "Officers would like to thank the public for their support and continue to urge anyone with information which would assist to come forward."

The raid on the shop happened around 2.30am today.

The area was cordoned off by police tape this morning ahead of the JCB being removed from the scene.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A 37-year-old man and a 31-year-old man – both from County Durham - are currently in police custody.

Detective Inspector Matt Scott said: “Whilst we have two suspects in custody, we also strongly believe there were more offenders involved in this incident. We have officers actively seeking those outstanding and are urging anyone with any information which could assist to get in touch."

The ATM was recovered abandoned nearby. It is not believed that any cash has been taken at this time.

Anyone with information should contact police by calling 101 and quoting incident number 13 of November 27, 2018.
