Cleator Moor residents got into the festive spirit as they gathered for the annual Christmas lights switch-on and market.

The town’s brass band, Bread and Butter Theatre Company and Santa’s Grotto all featured as part of the fun.

Gary McKee, award-winning fundraiser who ran 100 marathons in 100 days, switched the lights on with his children, Beau, 11 and Minnie, 6. He said: "It’s nice to be asked to switch the lights on and see so many people from the community here. The kids thought it was great.”

Cleator Moor Town Council organised and funded the event. Helen Gilmour, town clerk, said: "It’s been busy. We’ve had lots of people in buying Christmas goodies. We’ve had lots of help and some good stalls. It’s nice when the community come together."

The market, which comprised of craft stalls and foods, was arranged by the Cleator Moor Community Interest Company and was supported by local businesses and organisations.

Cleator Caring Moor hosted a stall selling a range of homemade goods. All the money made will be used to help struggling families over Christmas.

Michelle Denwood, who runs the group, said: “We try and raise money to put things in place before Christmas. Anything we sell, the money will go towards that. Every penny helps.

“The turnout’s been good. It’s nice to see people out and supporting it. It’s nice being in the community and seeing the children enjoying themselves.”

This is the fifth year the combined market and lights switch-on have taken place together.
