A Workington couple believe they may have Cumbria's oldest cat.

Geoff and Olive Taylor got black cat Poppy and her brother Tino 25 years ago, from a woman in Salterbeck, when they were six-week-old kittens.

Tino died 10 years ago, at a very respectable 15-years-old, but Poppy is still going strong.

In fact Poppy has managed to outlive six other cats in the Taylor household over the years, most recently Billy, who died on Monday, but who also lived to 15.

And clocking up an amazing 175 cat years, Geoff and Olive believe Poppy must be a contender for the title of the county's oldest feline.

Olive, of Corporation Road, said: "It's remarkable how she's still alive. We realised her age when looking at the dates on her vaccination card recently. She's a little character and doesn't ail for a thing."

With the onset of cold weather, Poppy has taken to running upstairs to sleep on a heated blanket. But Olive said that in the summer she was happy to go out in the yard to play and enjoyed rolling in catnip.

Partial to chicken and tuna, Poppy can still eat, despite having to have some teeth removed when she was 21.

At such an age the owners were concerned about her recovery from anaesthetic, but she recovered with no problems at all.
