Corney Fell Road has been closed this afternoon due to weather, leaving some commuters stranded.
According to Cumbria Road Watch on Twitter, the road is 'impassable'. Sellafield employees were notified of the road closure at 11.15am.
The closure was blamed on snowfall, but black ice is understood to be the issue.
A representative of Sellafield noted that most employees would be on site by that time. "We have a good relationship with Cumbria Highways Agency."
However, "It's a dangerous road at the best of times" and "It's going to be a problem overnight." Employees of the power plant were advised to make alternative travel arrangements in order to get home.
"It's more disruptive for our employees getting back home."
Although the county council were unaware of any closures, Cumbria Police have confirmed that the road is in fact closed.
Snow has been heavy on high ground over the past couple of days and is expected to cause further travel issues.
More on the situation as it develops.
