STUDENTS from West Lakes Academy rolled up their sleeves to spruce-up Castle Mount care home.

An entire skip was filled with rubbish from the garage of the home, which the pupils carefully sorted through and helped dispose of.

The group also enjoyed games, cake baking, tea making, and story sharing and was fascinated by the tales from the lives of the residents.

The students visited Castle Mount as part of the 10-week Future Pathways programme run by Copeland Hub, and sponsored by Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure. The pioneering project aims to prepare them for the future by teaching them skills through activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, bush craft and archery, alongside confidence building and team-building exercises.

As part of the programme they were asked to organise a Citizenship Day to give back to their local community.

Copeland Hub is a partnership between Copeland Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary, which works together with partner agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour and organise community projects.

The Hub has expanded its role from bringing agencies together to tackle issues, to proactively organising activities and projects for the benefit of the community. This includes the Future Pathways scheme.

Gillian Johnston, Community Engagement Advisor at Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure, said: “It has been lovely to see the students interacting with the residents of Castle Mount.

“The generational integration has been fantastic.”
