Plans to knock down the Distressed Sailor pub in Hensingham and build seven homes on the site have been given the green light.

Workington company TNK Developments lodged the outline planning application with Copeland Council earlier this year.

Businessman Richard Donnan reopened the pub as a seafood restaurant at the beginning of 2016, after it had been closed for 18 months.

The plans are for six three-bed houses and one with four bedrooms, with the existing access from Egremont Road kept.

In the outline planning application, Richard Lindsay, of TNK Developments, said: “The site occupied by the public house and large car park will accommodate seven dwellings, all with car parking and private spaces for each dwelling.”

The Distressed Sailor has been for sale with chartered surveyors Edwin Thompson.

The pub originally had a price tag of £395,000 but this was dropped to £360,000.

When the plans were revealed, Whitehaven Town Council chairman Graham Roberts said: “The Distressed Sailor has always been a nice place to go for a meal and relaxing drink.”

The Whitehaven News was unable to get in touch with Mr Donnan.
